Finland Pledges M2.23M in Support as Rohingya Crisis Deepens

(MENAFN) Finland has announced an additional £2 million (about $2.23 million) in humanitarian support for Rohingya refugees sheltering in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar district, as global funding shortfalls strain relief operations.

The UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, confirmed on Sunday that the contribution will help maintain life-saving assistance and protection programs for the displaced population.

“With this increased contribution, Finland enables UNHCR to fill critical gaps, including in underfunded areas such as skills development and resilience programming,” said the UNHCR Dhaka office in a statement.

Nearly ten years after fleeing widespread violence and persecution in Myanmar, around 1.2 million Rohingya refugees remain in Bangladesh, where humanitarian funding has been steadily declining.

According to the UN agency, shrinking financial support is disproportionately affecting vulnerable groups, including women and girls, people with disabilities, older refugees, and an estimated 150,000 recent arrivals since early 2024 who are still without proper shelter due to severe overcrowding in the camps.

“As the Rohingya response enters a fragile phase — marked by declining funding, worsening camp conditions, rising protection risks, and continued instability in Myanmar — Finland’s stepped-up commitment shows great generosity,” said Ivo Freijsen, UNHCR representative in Bangladesh.

The 2026 update of the Joint Response Plan (JRP) for the Rohingya crisis is seeking $710.5 million to support up to 1.56 million people, including both refugees and members of host communities in Bangladesh.

The appeal represents a 26% reduction compared with the 2025 plan and is designed to cover only the most essential life-saving needs amid worsening resource constraints.
