Finland Introduces Citizenship Exam Under New Law
The measure was approved on Wednesday by a vote of 153–21, while 25 lawmakers were absent, according to reports.
The law is scheduled to come into effect at the beginning of 2027.
Under the new rules, individuals seeking Finnish citizenship will need to pass an exam conducted in either Finnish or Swedish.
The test is expected to include questions on subjects such as Finland’s history, culture, human rights, and equality, according to reports. However, full details of the exam content have not yet been released.
The initiative was developed under Prime Minister Petteri Orpo’s government, which began working on the proposal last year. It comes alongside a broader set of immigration-related reforms, including changes to asylum procedures and faster deportation processes, according to reports.
